UbD Vs 3 Column Design Table
At first, I assumed that the 3 column table would be easy to develop, that was not the case. Creating the 3 column table was a delicate process in which each column had to connect and support the overall goal. The 3 column table gave insight to big broad goals. The goals were difficult to create because they weren't based on the standards of which we teach according to our state. 3 column table is created so that teachers could provide students insight into how their content is applicable to the real world.
In comparison, UbD allowed teachers to think about the results first then create goals and activities based on the results. Both not easy at all because you truly had to think away from desired results is to pass this standardized test. Thinking outside the box is often the complicated task, how can we deliver learning to 21st-century learners and keep them engaged with the world around, how do we make it relevant for the learner? The 3 column table and UbD both have thises a premise to allow educators to reflect with, how are we going to bring this standard to relevancy to a 21st- century learners.
The 3 column table is for students to understand how the standard is relevant to them whereas the UbD is a for teachers or educators to understand how we bring standards to relevancy to the classroom. These design products are to help the learner and the educator to connect the dots in learning. I feel like you can't have a UbD without a 3 column table; the goals created based on the real world experiences allows the teacher to create a UbD to be developed into a more cohesive piece. My 3 column table was a big influence in the creation of my UbD because I was allowed to create the real world goal and also connect to the learning standard that I have to teach in my content.
My UbD was inspired by 3 column table and the goal that I wanted students to understand literary work has the power to cultivate how we think and how we develop as people. So through my 3 column table, I was able to identify the goal and standard that would help me teach this skill to students. If they are able to connect to self to their reading, they are able to develop skills such as inferencing, drawing conclusions and analyzing that would be used across the curriculum. They are also able to see how the content benefits them as people not just learners.
