Why?

I believe students need opportunities in school to grow and build confidence in their learning through their interest.

How?

To do this, I will develop a tutorial environment that allow students to explore their learning that will build confidence in their learning abilities.

What?

We will help student build to confidently build the skills they struggle within their classes through allow them to take ownership in their tutorial plans.

I have trouble getting students to come to tutorials. It’s one of the major reasons why my students are not successful. I do not provide opportunities to understand what the individual weakness of my students are. I gloss over most missed concepts and teach them to everyone that walks through my door. I treat them as if they are just another failed grade that needs to retest and move on with their life.

Am I building a classroom where I am showing that I care about their individual success?

No. Absolutely not.

Each of the 110 individuals in my classroom should matter. How they learn and what they don’t know individually should matter.

In hearts of hearts, that’s why I became a teacher for that moment when my students finally understand a difficult concept and see their eye light up in excitement about the knowledge they’ve just gained.

Imagine the amount of light of knowledge we can give our students when we allow ourselves to see their struggle and help them grow in their learning.

The sense of urgency I see among my students is that they don’t feel that tutorials truly meets their needs. It’s an absolute waste of their time.

How do I know this?

They’ve told me.

They’ve told me when I request for them to come in and they don’t show up.

They’ve told me when they realized for the 2nd time they’ve failed the test over the same concepts.

Tutorials should be about the individual, not about a test they failed but about what they don’t understand individually. Tutorials should about the process and quality of delivery for our students. Within tutorials, they should be able to explore by developing questions and seeking answers through their interest.

This drives my How, as a campus we need to create a tutorial environment that provides students with ownership, choice and voice.

Students need to be heard about what they are confused on and given the choice to explore topics in a setting that allow them to create questions and seek answers.

If we give students the ownership in how they learn, they will find that it’s not a waste of opportunity but an opportunity to grow and become confident in themselves. In order for us to do that, we have to reinvent how we approach tutorials in the morning. In learning, the individual matters.
